This tool is made for estimating population and demographic statistics within a user-defined region. The regions you can create are circles or polygons of any shape and you can have multiple shapes at a time. The statistics generated include the population's age pyramid and an estimation of population trends.
The estimates returned are based on data from SEDAC's Gridded Population of the World, Version 4 Revision 11 (GPWv4.11) data collection which can be found here.
The population data is based on the most detailed spatial resolution available from the results of the 2010 round of Population and Housing Censuses, which occurred between 2005 and 2014. This data is extrapolated to produce population estimates for the years 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020. GPWv4 is gridded with an output resolution of 30 arc-seconds (approximately 1 km at the equator).
This visualization enables people to quickly obtain estimates of the number of people residing in specific areas without having to download and analyze large amounts of spatial data.
